The Challenger 7, which is already in stores, is supposed to be almost identical (save for the lugs) for anyone who wants to get an idea of how the Clifton 9 fits. The Meta Rocker technology that all the Hoka shoes have, combined with the updated responsiveness of the midsole, makes the Clifton 9 a versatile shoe for long runs and uptempo runs as well. Hoka did a great job with getting more energy return out of the new midsole and keeping it at a light weight of 7.3 oz for women and 8.7 oz for men.
The Clifton 9 GTX also feels a little stiffer and firmer to run in because of the Hoka ‘traction pods’. The pattern on the pods has been changed to give the outsole more grip. It does the job in my experience, especially on wet tarmac and greasy moss-covered paths. You trade off a little bit of ‘smoothness’ but get extra grip in the wet.
